Good grief, with all this global warming it’s hard to believe winter is upon us again. What better way to celebrate the season than embracing the cold at the Roanoke Civic Center ice-rink? Public Ice Skating at the Civic Center is a terrific way to entertain the family with public skate dates on Saturdays, November 17 & 24 from 11:30 am - 3 pm. Don’t worry if it’s your first time, the Roanoke Valley Ice Advocates will be on hand these days, offering free lessons on introductory skating. Keep your eyes on the web for all the details, as Sunny FM will also host a “Saturday Night on Ice” during November at the Civic Center, complete with a mirrored Disco Ball and great tunes from Sunny FM, date is yet to be announced. And if you just can’t get enough, watch for upcoming Sunday afternoon skate dates, “Blessed Blades”, designed for church groups of all denominations. Skating admission is $5, with an additional $2 for skate rental; groups of 20+ receive $1.00 off admission. park it Dressed to the nines for a downtown event and approaching your venue in the pouring rain? What to do, what to do? Downtown restaurant 202 Market is now offering city-goers a parking alternative. The restaurant introduced front- door valet parking for ALL downtown patrons in October, much to the delight of area businesses and visitors. The service is provided by Towne Park, the same company that provides the service at Hotel Roanoke, and is available Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 5 pm - 2 am. 202 Market has reserved about 40 spaces for the service and of course, it adds a little sophistication to the scene that uniformed valets will take each car and park it in the nearby lot until the customer is ready to “have it brought around”. Parking has long been an issue on the market so the service has been carefully planned with city officials. The charge for the luxury is $10, plus tip…saving that 2 hour hairdo: priceless. a lasting liturgy There are few expressions of divine grace as tangible as music. Perhaps this is why St. John’s Episcopal Church in downtown Roanoke continues to offer their congregation and the public such eloquent and elegant musical offerings as Music On the Corner to bring their divine message home. This year Music on the Corner presents the Annual All Saints Memorial Concert…An Evening of Bach on Friday, November 2 at 6 pm, with a reception preceding the concert at 5:15 pm. The concert will feature Motet No.I “Singer dem Herren ein neues Lied” (Sing to the Lord a New Song) with the St. John’s Choir and Chamber Orchestra; as well as, Magnificat, with Soprano Judith Cline, Mezzo Soprano Carla Dirkalov, Tenor Michael Gallant and Baritone Philip Bouknight with The St. John’s Choir & Chamber Orchestra and Conductor David Charles Campbell. St. John’s is located at the corner of Jefferson Street and Elm Avenue in Downtown Roanoke and offers a warm welcome to all who pass by and soothing music to all in need. men in black…and blue If you haven’t been blessed, yet, to bear witness to the percussive phenomenon that is Blue Man Group – you must go see this unique troupe as they make a stop at the Roanoke Civic Center on November 2 at 8 pm. The group’s current tour “How to be a Megastar 2.1” brings to the stage a newer, more user friendly combination of music, comedy and multimedia theatrics to create a unique form of entertainment that, according to USA Today is “an absolutely ecstatic experience. The most inventive theatre to come along in ages.” Join the celebration and experience bluephoria! The show takes the audience through a “workshop” on how to create “the perfect rock concert experience.” In the process, they celebrate, skewer and otherwise deconstruct rock stardom in all its narcissistic glory. Expanding on the “Rock Concert Manual” concept from The Complex Rock Tour, this time around the Blue Men download a new “how-to manual” that takes the audience through a uniquely clever and interactive show that guarantees to deliver hypnotic entertainment for all ages. Ticket prices range from $50 to $95 based on seating selection. the nutcracker ball As the air gets nippy and the glorious Christmas season sweeps in, fond memories of tinkling music and beautiful ballerinas may get valley ballet buffs ready for a special evening of dining, dance and entertainment to benefit the Southwest Virginia Ballet. The company will host its First Annual Nutcracker Ball on November 17, at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center Roanoke Ballroom. The evening will begin with an elegant cocktail Hour from 6 - 7 pm and continue with dinner from 7 - 8 pm and dancing to The Kings until 11 pm. Attendees will enjoy a performance of Nutcracker variations by members of SVB and a variety of Nutracker-inspired activities, as well as a silent auction, that will include 12 unique nutcracker statues designed and decorated by 12 area artists. Tickets for the ball are $80 per person or $150 per couple with corporate tables also available for purchase. Reserve your tickets by November 1 and receive the special lodging rate available at the Hotel Roanoke for Ball attendees. Money raised from the ball and silent auction will help increase funding for Southwest Virginia Ballet, a regional company that affords dancers a free education and helps lead them toward becoming professionals. tie one on It’s rarely too much to ask a local Hokie fan to “tie one on” to celebrate our team, but real (no pun intended) Hokie fans and alum will be delighted to learn that local clothiers, Alligator Alley, has been working with vineyard vines®, to bring Virginia Tech fans something they might not have seen before. vineyard vines®, a company best known for its elegant neckties, was founded in 1998 on Martha’s Vineyard by brothers Shep and Ian Murray. The company now offers a variety of accessories and apparel for men, women, and children. vineyard vines® products are sold in over 600 specialty and department stores worldwide. Their Custom College Collection is rapidly expanding, growing tenfold in the past three years. Currently these products created for everything from sports teams to class reunions can be found at universities, graduate schools and development offices all across the country. That’s right, other schools have had them for years and now VT is on the rise with its very own custom ties. To check out the latest Hokie-wear visit the Alligator Alley near you. There are three locations in our area: Roanoke, Lynchburg and Blacksburg. wine down for the holidays Aren’t you just a little tired of using the eenie, meenie method of wine selection; perhaps based on a label you think is pretty or a mild grape you heard was tasty? No more. Now that Wine Gourmet has finally moved their vast collection from Botetourt to Roanoke (beside the new Ukrop’s grocery store) you will never have to blindly guess again. Co-owners Kimberly Kolb Eakins and Cary Benares, both Certified Specialists of Wine, and their highly knowledgeable and educated staff are here to save the day. And this glorious store has so much to offer…when the shop moved from Botetourt; it doubled its square footage, increased its wine and beer inventory, and gained a wine seminar room. It’s a new wine world for Roanoke, as this shop offers classes and seminars on wine and beer education. “I got in the whole business to educate the customer,” commented Eakin, “you don’t shop (here) anonymously…we’re all studied and we try to really concentrate on wines that are $15 and under that are really good wines.” And if that doesn’t make your wine world simpler, how about free wine tastings on Saturdays from 12 - 5 pm and free beer samples on Fridays from 5 - 8 pm? See you there. Royal reunion Get ready to reminisce as one of the best known bands on the East Coast and Roanoke’s own, The Original Royal Kings will perform at this year’s Holiday Reunion Show and Dance at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center Roanoke Ballroom. Don’t miss this musical walk down memory lane - the Royal Kings used to play their brand of R&B all over town,”It’s a thrill for us to get together and play as a group again. We were fortunate to have some of the best musicians in the country in our band. We had a home here in Roanoke. It was a nightclub called “The Kings Inn”. It was named after us and over the years, we had the pleasure of performing with many national acts,” commented the former leader of the Royal Kings, Perry Caligan. This year the Kings will share the stage with local favorites, The Original Rhythm Doctors of Salem (house rockin’ rhythm and blues) and The Key West Band (Jimmy Buffet covers). “The Reunion show is going to be special, because we get to share the stage with a great band…it’s going to be a fantastic night,” said Caligan. Tickets for the event are $25 and may be purchased at the Hotel Roanoke, The Longbranch Restaurant in Salem, Cal Spas at Tanglewood Mall and Glassner Jewelers at Oak Grove Plaza, you must be 21 years or older for admission. winter sustenance Leaves change, watercooler talk turns to football and there’s a familiar flavor to the changing season…but nothing truly embodies Fall in the mountains like spicy, hot chili.
