Art Tour Ten Reception during Art by Night
Gallery 108

Thursday, April 3rd 6-8 pm
Don’t miss the reception for Art Tour Ten at Gallery 108. Art Tour Ten is a group of professional artists in the New River Valley that periodically opens their private studios to the public. They show at sponsor locations, such as Gallery 108 to give viewers a taste of their open studio tours. Take this opportunity to talk to members and decide which artists’ studios you will visit. The work on display will include ceramics, oil paintings, mixed media, stone sculptures, jewelry, woodturnings, and photography by professionally established artists. Work will be up from April 1 until April 26. The artists’ reception for the exhibit is Thursday, April 3 from 6-8 pm and coincides with the monthly Art by Night affair.

Gallery 108 presents a unique opportunity for visitors because it is managed and staffed by contributing artists. This gives guests the chance to meet exhibiting artists on a regular basis. As a community oriented co-operative gallery, Gallery 108 also hosts exhibitions of art from local high schools with the intention of giving future artists the experience of exhibiting and selling their art and working with a professional gallery. Gallery 108 is located on the historic Roanoke City Market (across from the Market Building at the corner of Salem & Market Streets). Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am-5 pm. For additional information go to www.gallery108.biz or call 540.982.4278. After taking in Gallery 108, meander to one of the many other participating Art by Night locations, including Center in the Square, Cheshire Gallery, Gala Studio, Harrison Museum of African American Culture, The Market Gallery, Pamela Jean Gallery, McGraw Fine Art, Roanoke Main Library, Roanoke Valley Printworks, Signature 9 Gallery, Studios on the Square Gallery, and The 202 Market.

Featured Artists Art Reception & David Baldacci Book Signing
The Little Gallery on Smith Mountain Lake

Saturday April 13th 1-3 pm • Sunday April 27th 1-3 pm
The Little Gallery at Smith Mountain Lake is providing two different occasions to get out and enjoy the beginning of Spring this month. The earliest is a reception and continual exhibition of work by the brilliant nature painters David Heath, Z. L. Feng and Mei Shu on April 13th from 1-3 pm. The Second is a book signing of Virginia author David Baldacci’s soon to be released book, The Whole Truth. The book signing is April 27th from 1-3 pm.

The April 13th reception is enticing because it pairs an excellent natural setting with three distinctively different artists, whose work calls into being the enchantment of nature. David Heath’s oil paintings present the subtleties of nature with the luminescence only available through the oil medium. Z.L. Feng’s world-renowned work is at home at Smith Mountain Lake. His atmospheric whimsical watercolor landscapes radiate the energy and life of the New River. Mei Shu often changes between oil and watercolor. Her paintings are a colorful feast of seasonal landscapes, encompassing the serenity and solidity of nature.

David Baldacci’s political thrillers are informed by his education and experience as a lawyer in Virginia. His first novel, Absolute Power, quickly became a best seller and a movie, starring Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman. It tells the story of a fictional American President and his Secret Service agents’ attempts to cover up the unintentional death of the President’s mistress. His upcoming novel, The Whole Truth, takes the reader on an intense voyage through impending danger and international intrigue. Military, politics, corporations, and media all play a part in discovering the whole truth. See more about David Baldacci and his book in our interview, on page 42.

The Little Gallery features more than 200 internationally and locally known artists. It also provides a wide arrangement of merchandise and art related services. They are open 7 days a week. Winter hours are 10 am to 5 pm and summer hours are 10 am to 9 pm. The Little Gallery is located at Bridgewater Plaza on Booker T. Washington Highway (Rt. 122) at beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. Take in the sights of Spring and come to The Little Gallery.

The 8th Annual Open Studios Tour
Throughout Roanoke

Saturday April 26th 10 am-5 pm • Sunday April 27th 12-5 pm
Spring ushers in the rush of blooming scenery and the awakening of nature. For the last seven years it has also signaled Roanoke’s Annual Open Studios Tour. On the weekend of April 26th and 27th, fourteen Roanoke artists and six guest artists are opening their home studios to the general public. This rare family-friendly event is the perfect grouping of two of Roanoke’s richest resources, the outdoors and the many resident fine artists.

The Open Studios Tour is a VIP pass for the whole family. Usually art enthusiasts only see the end product of weeks or months of work, displayed at a place of business. The participating members of The Open Studios Tour want guests to see not only what they create, but how and where they create it. Ask questions or simply stroll through any or all of the studios on the Tour.

Take in the bountiful colors of Spring while touring the wealth of fine artisans of Roanoke by walking, biking or driving, as long as you do it with the windows open and the top down. The locations of artists’ home studios are grouped within walking or riding distance from each other, throughout Roanoke. Brochures with maps will be available starting April 1 at The Market Gallery, Studios on the Square, Gallery 108, The Fine Arts Museum, and Southern Graphics. Additionally, a large map will appear in the Inside Out section of The Roanoke Times, Thursday, April 24. The map can be mailed to you by calling Mary Bullington at 540.904.2828. Artists’ studios will be clearly marked with signs and banners.

Take advantage of the extraordinary opportunity to visit artists in their natural environment and simultaneously experience springtime in Roanoke. The 8th Annual tour is a two-day event so there are no excuses. Find more information about the 8th Annual Opens Studios Tour at http://www.openstudiosofroanoke.com or through one of the contributing studios.
