“Graffito: Scratching the Surface” at the Art Museum of Western Virginia in Roanoke
Graffito: Scratching the Surface is an exhibition curated and presented by the Art Museum’s Young Curators, a free student led program for area high school students. The exhibition showcases a non-traditional blend of unique art by local artists and explores the variety of forms of urban art, including the influences of graffiti, murals, and public installations. Believing that urban art is an art based on freedom, self-expression, and individuality, the Young Curators’ exhibition presents over 15 works encouraging visitors to contemplate what constitutes ‘genuine art’. Included in the exhibition are paintings by Geoff Conley, Rori Holford, Aaron Tolley, and Kyle Wilson; graphic designs by Eli Bishop; graffiti art by Evan Niemann; and Leo Straub and a packaging tape sculpture by Carlos Maciel. The exhibition will remain on view at 309 Campbell Avenue through June 13. Admission is free and the exhibition is open on Mondays and Fridays, 4:00-5:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. www.artmuseumroanoke.com

“Invasion” by Artist Juan Astianax at Pamela Jean Gallery in Roanoke
Show Runs - May 16, 2008 to June 13, 2008
Meet the Artist Reception – Friday, May 16, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the sprit of “Local Colors”, Pamela Jean Gallery proudly presents “Invasion” by Artist Juan Astianax. Works from one of Mexico’s finest artists can be viewed for free in downtown Roanoke from May 16 through June 13, 2008.

Astianax’s vibrant paintings and sculptures tell of a Mexico where machines reflect the ages passed. Intrigued by the cycle of Production, Use and Discard and how our relationship with objects change as they pass through these cycles, Juan was once told “you can find the end of something in its beginning”. With this project Juan Astianax works to establish evidence in the public about the relationships we have with machines.

Astianax states, “I believe that art is something intimate and I believe so because creating consists of generating new movements and rhythms in the world, reflecting and intervening in its nature to widen the limits the human spirit could have, in this way art is useful to state anything can exist, or be created, or invented, that’s why artwork can be found (at least potentially) in any place, it can have any shape and any position.” Art allows liberty: that communion of the wish of an artist, his ability to imagine, experimenting and his knowledge of the reality he wants to convey.

Pamela Jean Gallery is committed to providing education about artists, art styles, and media. Their goal is bridging generations, connecting, and bringing people together. In this spirit, they are pleased to present the work of Mexican Artist Juan Astianax.
