“CITY’s Picks”
Guys and Dolls presented by Showtimer’s Theatre
July 17th - August 3rd
Showtimer’s Community Theatre

All the hot gamblers are in town, and they’re all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week’s incarnation of “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York”; the only problem is he needs $1000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown who’s short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan’s $1000 bet that he can’t get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you’ve got quite a musical. Includes the songs: “Fugue for Tinhorns”, “Luck Be a Lady”, “Sit Down”, and “You’re Rocking the Boat”. Email: boxoffice@showtimers.org or phone: 540.774.2660 or 1.877.336.9294
Space Monkey
Saturday, August 2, 8pm
In 2003, Space Monkey orchestrator Johnny F. Hollywood of Richmond, Virginia formed a “supergroup” with younger brother Lomax and musician friends John Fonseca of San Francisco, Chris “Whale dog” Whalen of Tampa Bay, and Keith Andrews of New York City. Their first performance was titled Hot And Now’s Evil Rock n’ Roll Monkey Circus. The band reunites annually for one night’s performance, and on this five year anniversary, they are coming to Roanoke, Virginia and bringing Roanoke’s own musician, filmmaker and television producer Charles E. Cullen to the stage.
Harking back to the days when rock n’ roll stage shows told a story, like David Bowie with Ziggy Stardust, the Space Monkey Odyssey tells the tale of Simon, a monkey who was shot up to outer space in 1965. The show will feature two acts, appearances by some of Cullen’s popular puppets; dancers, and original music by Hollywood and band, as well as Cullen favorites. The show promises to be spontaneous and take the audience on a bizarre trip to space via music that blends classic rock, glam, and pop sensibilities. Tickets are $12.00 per person and may be purchased through the Jefferson Center box-office (540-345-2550, or toll free 866-345-2550) or Plan 9 Music.
