Their regular receptions for exhibiting artist are fantastic times to visit. They give the opportunity to have a catered leisurely stroll through the station while taking in music and fine art. This month’s showcase artist is sculpture Cheryl Dolby. Her exceptional work is a rare find. By successfully combing cultural and spiritual expression through approachable sculpture she achieves an aesthetic communication that few can attain. The originality of Cheryl’s work gives an intimacy that suggests history and legend. When asked about the legends that accompany each of her pieces, she explains, “My work is very personal to me. Each of my faces represents a special life. A life that seems to tell a story.” At the request of her customers, Cheryl has compiled her stories into several books: She Who Whispers; Grandmother Tree; Woman Within the Web; Layers and Healing Woman Journal. Each be purchased from Cheryl. Cheryl Dolby, a native of Warren, Ohio, has exhibited her sculpture at shows and galleries throughout the country. She is now a familiar part of the Roanoke fine arts tapestry. She can often be found at the Historic Farmers Market in Downtown Roanoke. Her bombastically mosaiced van is a sure sign that she is there. Exhibit is open now and closes July 29th. There is a tremendous captivating quality in Ms. Davis’ pictures. They are transparent watercolors of bigger than life blossoms, tropical foliage, or tender landscapes. The subjects come from being outdoors on a hike, perhaps a visit to the river or walking through a horticulture garden. She captures the delicacy and colorful possibilities of each flower petal, and with the help of her brush translates their images onto the paper’s surface. Carole has just returned from Italy, and perhaps she’ll include landscape impressions of her trip. I am awaiting eagerly of Carole’s new collection, it will be such a pleasure to group them and hang them on the gallery walls. The public is invited, please come to the reception, you won’t be disappointed. “…And The Tree Was Happy” by Casey Hammer. Mason and Painter Janet Dance Exhibit, Nelson Gallery, Lexington. Nelson Gallery in downtown Lexington will feature recent works by sculptor John W Mason and painter Janet Dance from July 1 through July 29. Opening reception for the exhibit will be held at the gallery on Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m., on July 11. John W Mason, a newcomer to the Lexington area from the United Kingdom, will display five large pieces, all expressing the human body in semi-abstract form. The pieces are carved from granite, soapstone, or marble. Mason states “For me one of the great appeals of working in stone is its very intractability,” and he “allows the shape of the stone itself to determine the final design of the piece.” Eight paintings by Janet Dance will be displayed in the Nelson Gallery front room together with Mason’s sculptures. Dance’s subject matter is also influenced by stone. In this series of paintings, she explores the “shifting light and shadows” of the rock outcroppings on her property. The basic medium in this series is oil, mixed with wax and graphite, and applied with brush, pallette knife and “occasionally a finger” to create rich textures. Nelson Gallery, an artists’ cooperative, is located at 27 West Washington Street in downtown Lexington. The public is cordially invited to the opening reception on July 11, and to enjoy the changing monthly exhibits during open hours: from 11 to 5 daily, but closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
